Nine years teaching other people's kids how to think. Then I had to learn it for myself.

I spent close to a decade as an international teacher, most of it in Vietnam, teaching Business Studies, Humanities, and Global Perspectives. My actual job was teaching other people how to think clearly, question assumptions, and make sense of complicated things. I was good at it. I also spent most of that decade not applying a single bit of it to my own life.

I said yes to a lot of things because they were available, not because I'd chosen them. A teaching contract here, a side hustle there, most of which failed quietly and got filed under “lessons,” not losses, at least not out loud. Somewhere in there I co-founded ThinkerNick, a podcast built on a simple idea, passing the thinking and life wisdom of one generation to the next through honest conversation. It taught me more about building something from nothing than any classroom did.

Eventually I left teaching for London to start a business. It didn't work. I went back to Vietnam, not because I'd failed, but because I hadn't yet figured out what I was actually building toward. I came home to South Africa after that, this time with something closer to clarity: the realisation that the digital economy had moved on, and nobody had taught me the actual skills to build freedom inside it. Not passive income theory. Real, specific, learnable skills.

So I built them. LinkedIn management, social media management, media buying, content, the exact digital skills that create real income and real options, learned the hard way through Parallax, the services company I now run for paying clients. Every framework I write about has already been tested there first.

That's the whole method behind Nick Daniels: learn a real skill, apply it to real client work, prove it actually works, then teach it plainly so someone else doesn't have to lose nine years figuring it out on their own. I'm not writing from a highlight reel, I'm writing as someone who built this the hard way and can now show you the shortcut. If you're just starting out, you're not behind. You're simply starting from here, same as I did.
